CMS Open Payments|“Sunshine Act”
Open Payments is the online database for the public reporting of physician income from industry, pursuant to the Open Payments Act, also known as the “Sunshine Act.” On April 1st of each year, The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) opens the 45-day review and dispute period for physicians and teaching hospitals, which ends in May. This process occurs after applicable manufacturers and GPOs have submitted their payment data to the CMS Open Payments system, but before the data becomes available to the public. The review process is voluntary, but to participate in the process, and review and correct the data, physicians and teaching hospitals must register in both the CMS Enterprise Identity Management System (EIDM) and the Open Payments system. Data for the prior calendar year is published in June.
Clinicians and covered members of the University research community are encouraged to review their information in the database, if any. If you have any additional questions on the Open Payments Act or the database, visit the links below. Also, feel free to contact the Office of Research Oversight at (202) 687-3911.
